Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout

September 7, 2009

I picked up a bottle of Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout from the Kensington Wine Market this weekend. It was recommended to me by the man who orders beer for the store.

The Brooklyn Brewery describes the stout as follows:

We use three mashes to brew each batch of this beer, achieving a luscious deep dark chocolate flavour through a blend of specialty roasted malts. We brew it every year for the winer season. It is delicious when newly bottled, but also ages beautifully for years.

The first thing you’ll notice about this beer when pouring is how smooth and almost oil like it is. Next you’ll notice the extremely dark head it produces. This is a very dark beer

At first taste I was taken back by how rich and how chocolatey it really is. I’m no chocolate hound so it took a few sips to get use to but after getting by the powering rich/bitter chocolate taste I was able to appreciate the smokey charcoal taste that stayed with me for the rest of the beer.

The beer is quite syrupy but has a nice silky/oily quality to it that allows for very smooth drinking.

This is a great sipping beer and I ejoyed making my way through it slowly throughout the course of a movie. I’d recommend it to anyone who loves a dark beer and especially to those that love chocolate. Perfect to sip away during desert or in the evening after a meal.
