Dead Snow

Dead Snow

Just hurried back from the plaza, it’s chilly! So happy to live blocks away this year. Dead Snow was sold out and we had a great time.

This group of friends thought they had all they needed for a successful Easter vacation: cabin, skis, snowmobile, toboggan, copious amounts of beer, and a fertile mix of the sexes. Certainly, none of them anticipated not returning home alive! But, the Nazi-zombie battalion haunting the mountains surrounding the aptly named Øksfjord (Axefjord) had other plans…

.

With KILL BULJOTHE MOVIE director/scriptwriter Tommy Wirkola at the helm, the added enthusiasm of co-writer Stig Frode Henriksen, and a dedicated crew, DEAD SNOW proves that you don’t need a big budget to create a phenomenon. This groundbreaking Norwegian Nazi-zombie movie features established actors and stellar special effects (the effects budget alone amounts to $600,000, more than any other Norwegian movie). No less than 475 quarts of blood were used in the scenes where the Nazi‐zombie soldiers arise from their graves and attack the unsuspecting heroes. A very different kind of horror film, this feelgood‐Nazi‐zombie‐splatter‐comedy will satisfy even the most discerning gore aficionado.

I sure love zombie films so of course I was excited to see Dead Snow and I must say it lived up. The beginning had me questioning if this was actually a zombie movie or a typical young people in the woods horror instead. Alas a young man suddenly has his head ripped in two and things quickly escalated to full on nazi zombie gore hilarity.

Like many Zombie film this one pays homage to past greats of the genre and that was certainly appreciated by the audience. There are some hilarious scenes including a character fighting a zombie while hanging off a cliff by another zombies intestines as well as a certain amputation scene. As long as you can let go of the need for a serious horror vibe or a plot that isn’t full of holes you’ll enjoy this.

The film delivers what it promises and with a fantastic full house audience of excited zombie fans it was a joy to watch. Screenings like this are the reason of love film fest.
