Depict — My New Favourite iPhone Game

December 27, 2009

Over this holiday weekend I downloaded a new app from Makeshift Games called Depict. The game is more or less digital pictionary. Players take turns drawing a word they are given and other players try to guess what the word is.

I love these kinds of games. Many hours of my life were lost to INKLINK when shockwave was still cool and I’ll still play Draw My Thing from time to time. Depict takes this digital pictronary concept and tweaks it for better mileage on the iPhone.

Instead of mashing on your iphone keyboard to guess the correct word you are given a selection of up to 6 things. While at first it seems too easy you will quickly learn that the 6 words you can select from are always visually similar, making it quite difficult. Take a look at the screenshot below. The word being drawn was compost (which you can see I guessed correctly).

Depict

To make things interesting you are rewarded for guessing the word faster than everyone else. The catch is that you only get one guess. Blow it and you receive 0 points that turn

You’ll have also noticed from the screenshot that the drawings are very pixelated. You get a big ms-paint style pencil which makes it both fun and difficult to express your word. The entire interface follows this pixelated style and it works great.

The last thing I’ll touch on is that this game is snappy! Open the app and hit “Global Play” and you’ll be inserted directly into a game in progress. No trying to find open rooms and no lengthly connecting periods. Worked great on 3g and wifi for me. The game also has some private gaming modes for playing with friends which I haven’t had the chance to checkout yet.

Right now the app is free so I’d suggest snagging it if you have an iTouch or iPhone.
